Featured Artist: interview with Ruby My Dear

by insti2te

exclusive interview with the French artist  Ruby My Dear for the shituationist institute:

Could you tell us something about yourself and your artistic background please.

My first music education was classical guitar and then bass guitar. But the school was very boring for me,  so I continued on my own and with friends, doing collaborations with drummers until my twenties. Then I went to to study sound in college and learned to work on pro tools. There i started to compose electronic music and the same time still played in a band, rock dub style. As I moved again I decided to have my own project. But in the future, I really want to play in a band again, i like this energy.

So at the moment you work on your own? Are there collaborations you participate in ?

I collaborated with Substance B for two free EPs: one release on PEEP record’s “Uncanny Valley” under the name of Doc Colibri and the other one appears on Pavillon36 record: “Agonistes Beta-2″. We choose this EP’s name because we are two asthmatics and agonistes beta 2 is a bronchodilators. Under the name of Doc Colibri I released an EP on Sociopath recordings and LoveLove Records and stopped to release in 2010. Under the Ruby My Dear ‘s name, I have releases on Illphabetik, Peace Off, Acroplane, Braincore and Reconstruction Productions. My remix of “Building steam with a grain of salt” was chosen by Dj Shadow to be featured in a remix album (you can listen to it on my soundcloud page).

Something you want to share about your local scene, some insights or recommendations?
Let me share these French electronic producers and bands: Cellscape, Substance B, Broken toy, Stazma, broken nvep, burglecut, skuge, falcon, klitorix, Larsp, Pierro the moon, Plukx, Sec, Sam Pleater, syndrom…
What equipment do you use, what is your work process?

I use protools and reason in rewire. I start track with a melody or a sample and try to construct something around it . I use a lot of samples of other styles to try to have something with mixed influence. In most of my tracks there is more than 16 audiotracks and 4 aux channels.

What are your next gigs and where can we preview your works online?

My next gig is in London at Bang Face the 14th of October, after that in Poland (Bydgoszcz) with Duran Duran Duran on the 29th of October, and the 25th of November in Toulouse. You can check these sites for more info:

You can preview my work on soundcloud, there are some tracks

Any plans for the future you want to announce here…?
Some projects but nothing sure for now. I just can say that it will be great.
How about some namedropping, do you want to recommend some artists that inspire you?
I am inspired by a lot of styles, not only hard electronic. I am interested when artists try something different, with sound exploration and ambience. Such as Vaetxh, Roots Manuva, Mike Patton, Bjork, Mount Kimbie, The Mars Volta, Techdiff, Igorrr, Krumble, Subjex, Baconhead, Squarepusher, Flying Lotus, Hidden Orchestra
Thx Ruby My Dear!

it’s more broken and loose than the recent gebirk techno download. seems to work well with saxophone though. also check these two old remixes by m.barrison (fbrk43) that surfaced again: 1 & 2.

record reviews: Kid 606 kill the sound before the sound kills you

by fancypunk01

This is an other review on the blog concerning a classic album such as the kid 606 – kill the sound before the sound kills you. It was released by tigerbeat6 on vinyl and on cd by ipecac. This album certainly gives an impression of the 90s breakbeat sound , rather oldschool  inspired. If you like breakcore stuff then the kill the sound before the sound kill you is required for your collection. A tracks i can easily remark from the album could be the who wah kill the sound (track no 2), an awesome bombing of breaks , drum n bass , full of broken beats and ragga orientated vocals. Every track of this album is a piece of gold. Highly recommended by is this week.

Party review:Venetian Snares in London/Brighton(23-24/02)

by mnanotek

To be honest I found it quite difficult to find the right words in order to write this review & that’s because once again I was left pretty much speechless! I’ve seen Venetian Snares more than enough times & in a bizarre way his sound has always had the same impact on my brain. The 1st time I saw him live was in Brighton where I used to live. It was the 6th of June 2006 (06/06/06)!! Was my 1st breakcore party ever! It was very apocalyptic indeed.. A real revelation & that was it.. Been worshiping his sound ever since! Let’s get back to the present & club XOYO in London, where Aaron Funk brought his extraterrestrial alien energy a week ago. It was Wednesday night & the gig was sold out which is not surprising me at all since all Venetian Snares gigs are more or less sold out. He went on stage around 10:30, everyone was delirious & the dancefloor started pulsating violently! His performance was an amazingly manipulated, old meets new acid drenched mix, with tunes from albums such as ‘Dentrimentalist’, ‘Rossz Csillag Alatt Szuletett’ & ‘My so called life’. He left everyone mesmerized, happily fucked up asking for more! The 2nd stop of his European tour was Brighton where I 1st saw him 5 years ago! Another night another blast! Coalition, a seafront, usually laid back club left bombarded, screaming people, addictive frequency madness!!Nough said.. Check the vids I got for you or even better go check Venetian Snares!!Splendid superninja!!!

A friend of mine was at the XOYO gig in London & wanted to add smth about his 1st encounter with Mr Funk! Thank you Dan!;)

It’s one of the only gigs where a guy can trigger a machine gun drum sample for 10 seconds straight and the crowd will go nuts (the good kind of nuts) but that’s why we’re there right? Even though it’s really a Venetian Snares DJ set rather than live performamce, the visceral power of the music, combined with a rabid group of like-minded crazies is really mental. And he is one stylish knob-twiddler! There was a metal fan who hadn’t moshed for a couple of years who just lost it at the gig. This 5 foot girl beat the shit out of some biker in the pit and he loved it. Welfare Wednesday, off his latest offering ‘My So Called Life’ got a big welcome, the line ‘pretending I’m from London – in your punani’ being a funny quote for the night.

You can catch Venetian Snares here:

3.4 Petrol – Antwerp, Belgium
3.5 Alter Plagwitzer Bahnhof – Leipzig, Germany
3.9 Palace St Gallen – St Gallen, Switzerland
3.10 l’Embobineuse – Marseille, France
3.11 Row 14 – Barcelona, Spain
3.12 Bloc – Minehead, UK
