Fusion 2011, some fragmentary impressions

by insti2te

Instead of telling you everything we have experienced at Fusion-Festival this year (too many stories for this small space) we decided to give you a little overview about some interesting acts we’ve seen and share some pictures.

individualusername:

At first i want to mention Bingo Ingo & Die Bingo Band, who made an crazy combination of Bingo-Rock ( with songs like “In the Mood for Bingo” or “Sweet Bingo Boy” ) and a Bingo-Gala,  which I really enjoyed. We´ve managed to win 2 bottles of champagne and lots of booze there, that helped us to survive the rainy fusion nights. Another great act was Tour de Vinyl , who did an perfomance with a laptop and 2 hometrainer-bikes, that where moving the turntables, playing some comedy and audio-drama records. I also really enjoyed the gig of Toni Haupt & Band , playing an mostly improvised slow semi-electric concert at the dubstation, with live-vocals, drums, a horn-section and a laptop, getting all the dubheads up to dance. Another interesting concert I´ve seen, was by Station 17 , a band out of people with Down´s  Syndrom, who where really rocking the floor with an energetic mixture out of technoid Krautrock, Dub and Hip-Hop. But most of all I enjoyed the gig of Guru Guru, who are a legendary and very influental german Kraut- and Acid-Rock group, playing constantly since the late 60´s and alltough they are ( as i suppose ) all over 70 now, still make totally freaked-out live-shows, as you can see in this video for example.

and very few pictures from dr0fn0thing:

(it was so rainy…)

there is a pretty professional video out there, too professional and clean to represent this festival or any of the more freaky parts that individualusername recommended above, but whatever (let’s not romantisize retrounderground culture and crypto elitism), i’ll just embed it here for you to watch:

ION – The last days of spring EP

by fancypunk

Photobucket

Message to the listener:

The three tracks included in The Last Days Of Spring EP were recorded during the spring of 2011. The essential reason for these recordings was the internal situation of the city where I live, where a constant concern seemed frozen on people’s faces. Where any excitement ever existed in search of happiness, seemed now to be fast disintegrating into a panting decay of a mechanical life. At the same time, some gatherings with fellow artists and comrades musicians played some role. Meetings in a small and more “closed” studio city, factories of clandestine dreams, where people live and work for a love that knows nothing about time and a revolution that never ends. One of them I knew since the beginning of the 90’s, even before Los Angeles and New York kept him away from Athens for several years. Our paths met again, when six years ago, photography and journalism brought us back together. When I asked Freddie F. to collaborate with me, he accepted gladly, so he worked on the spoken delirium of Low Land, and from there it appeared to make a collaboration that in the future will breed more clandestine dreams. Equally important were these field recordings, which I made at Syntagma Square during the first peaceful assembly on May 25th. Digital audio files that found their way through an RE-201 Space-Echo machine and finally placed in the last two tracks of this EP. ION – The Last Days of Spring EP 01. Theme For An Occupied City 02. Low Land (ft. Freddie F.) 03. At The Bottom Of It All Giannis Papaioannou: Words, computers, tapes and analogue machines Freddie F.: Voice and voice fx Aggeliki Vrettou: Cover artwork Ilias Katelanos: Mastering

record reviews: robot for brains – The Hard Way

by fancypunk

With no doubt , you remember the interview of Robot for brains with MNanotek on this blog a few months ago. Today we focus again on robot for brains , presenting his EP “the hard way” as well as offering a link to download it for free.

Hard way ep is a selection of robot for brains tracks released on swischotheque. All tracks written, recorded, mixed & mastered by Gareth Cox from 07′ to 09′ using both hardware and software. Additional Mastering by Sven at ‘Borglab’.

All the tracks of this EP are beautiful. That acid sound inside this release  is totally a blast especially the “this is life” and “Rfb acid”. I still cant decide which track is my favorite , i love them both. “This is life” is totally a “k hole” :P and “Rfb acid” is simply a track you wanna keep on repeat mode. After listening to this EP , I rather think that we should keep the connection with the sound of the past and transform it in a progressive way. This EP is a good example of what I would like to listen , find and present on this blog future term.

The remixes by Thornton Force and Nightcrawlers are awesome as well. I think you should download this EP. highly recommended

Album review: Tim Exile – Listening Tree (Warp 2009)

by mnanotek

Listening Tree’ is Tim Exile’s 3rd album & was out on Warp/Planet mu in 2009. It‘s been characterized from ‘groundbreaking’ to ‘the worst album Warp has ever released’.

Being used to Tim Exile’s previous releases I was expecting some kind of gabbed out IDM, but to my surprise the 1st time I gave it a listen I was left kind of baffled & thought :‘That’s so cheesy!’  Since I’ve always appreciated Exile’s works & numerous times have enjoyed his improvisational live sets, I gave it another chance & kept on playing it until I realized how daring & original it was! It might have been 2 years since this album’s release but it still has the ability to make my day & it’s definitely more than cheesy (plus a bit of ‘cheese’ never hurt anyone..!)

Futuristic electro pop is probably the best way to describe ‘Listening Tree’ where Tim Exile’s classical music training & IDM background is apparent throughout the album.

‘Family Galaxy’ has got to be one of my favorite tracks out of the album. Its dreamlike contagious lyrics (Keep changing every day don’t stay the same or you’ll be a fool! The family galaxy keeps changing every day no matter what you do..) keep building up in a melodic swirl of synths that leave you with an euphoric feeling.

Overall ‘Listening Tree’ is an album that deserves your attention & it surely stands out in an often musically dull environment.

record reviews: Boards of Canada the campfire headphase

by fancypunk

The Campfire headphase is the third studio album of Boards of Canada released by Warp records in 2005. I was constantly listening again this album  last week, rethinking a bit  about the style of Boards of Canada in general. Actually the album took the duo 3 years to finish , I think totally understand why. It seems that a long discussion was taking place among these guys about music and life in general. All the tracks of this album are unique , perhaps I would like to remark Dayvan cowboy , Sherbet Head and Hey Saturday sun because was the inspiration for listening the whole album twice 2 days ago. The atmosphere that the music of the album creates can’t really be compared with a lot of other albums,  but in the other hand  is definitely  following the progressive style of warp music. A label which for over 20 years is releasing probably the best  albums of intelligent experimental electronic music and beyond. The melodies , the guitars and the feeling i get from the music is  like the first time I was in love , listening to some clever music and traveling with my mind ..or when I was rather feeling urbanist and nostalgic walking with my mp3 player in the center of the big metropolis I was born . I feel that this album is highly recommended to those people who gets what I m trying to describe previously. I know that many of my friends forgot currently that this album exists , so this is the right time to listen to it again ..so take your mp3 player and go for a walk in a big city street where ever you are. The campfire headphase  will show you the way

5 April 2010 :What a great after party that was! With Dario Zenker(Harry Klein) who kept us going until very late at Cable Club.

09 April 2010 : ‘THEM’ brought us a fantastic mixture of advanced electronica at Corsica Studios. Kuedo aka Jamie Vex’d, Boxcutter & PLANET MU’S Rudi Zygadlo fully entertained our ears!

23 April 2010 : Now who doesn’t know one of the most acclaimed film directors and video artists Chris Cunningham?Just remember Bjork’s ‘All is Full of Love’ or Aphex Twin’s ‘Windowlicker’. His live show at Royal Festival Hall was a pure multimedia experience!

16 July 2010 : An OVERKILL night can only be killer for sure! Some of the artists that send us elsewhere were: KID606,Drumcorps, Dj Scotch Egg, Loops Haunt, N>E>D & Ed Rush to name a few.

31 July 2010 : Warehouse parties are always amazing especially when combined with fine techno, this time with POPOF (Coccoon) & Gui Borratto (Kompakt). Lovely!

11 September 2010 : Cable Club was taken by a storm named Shed. Straight from Berlin and Ost Gut Ton of course. With him one of my favorite & most respected artists Surgeon! Blast!

25 September 2010 : Sweden’s DRUMCODE is one of my favorites & this event was totally spot on! It took place in an impressive warehouse which kept us bouncing  for hours with Adam Bayer’s, Chris Liebing’s & Alan Fitzpatrick’s quality basslines!

22 October 2010 : Another night another rave! BANGFACE are to blame this time who brought us I:GOR, A Guy Called Gerald and…….OTTO VON SCHIRACH straight from Miami!!BASS-BASS-BASS

27 November 2010 : We end this amazing year the way we started it.With…Ost Gut Ton which means Berghain which means the Berlin concrete temple of quality techno! That label party was an absolute gem of a night! Loved every second of it! Ben Klock played an unbelievable 7 hour set that left us mesmerized!
