Party Report : Autechre/Moderat live at the BIOS 17.9.10

by Urban Kung Foo

On September 17, Autechre played the BIOS in Athens, an encounter the greek fans had been waiting for a long time. The set lasted almost two hours and consisted of various (ar)rhythmic beats in which you could hardly hear a conventional melody, but this was not an unknown fact to the crowd that often encouraged the duo with yells and applause. The set never reached the styles of incunabula or tri repetae and was more focused on their recent works. In the course of their performance you could often feel tired by the repetitive use of autechrian beats and lack of melodies. Thumbs up for Autechre though, as building a proper live performance by creating your music instantly isn’t something you come across everyday nowadays in electronic music. The sound was good, though not as good as the one produced by MODERAT who had perform an hour before.Ze Berliners were excellent and seemed to enjoy themselves on the decks. They managed to combine the pre-recorded beats and loops of Modeselektor with the distorted melodies played by Apparat on both guitar and Nord Modular, as to give the crowd a good live performance, as live as their music can be.

review of “fresh things first” party in athens last weekend

by dr0fn0thing

so what do i remember from last saturdays dubstep/hiphop/d’n'b party in athens….

let me tell you why I think this party went totally bad, despite the fact that it seemed to have a pretty powerfull atmosphere at some points. first the djs gave us hiphop. more focused on showing off than doing a proper mixing (the sound was amazingly bad), this part of the party luckily ended soon after we arrived. then someone played surprisingly interesting dubstep. for like… three tracks. and then he switched to some wobble stuff, which heated up the crowd to encourage them to start pogo dancing as soon as the first breakbeats came up. well believe me, i am not at all against mosh dancing at electronic beat parties, but if the place is small like this, 4 hools kicking around people can spoil the fun for everybody. and they did indeed, most of the not so strong people left at this point and the upperclass hools and some punx turned the place in a hc concert. congratulations… well a dj who sees this happening should react accordingly in my opinion, and play some more deep stuff to get the audience back together. instead the mentioned above posers jumped around on stage, played more fast break stuff and took pictures of the mosh pit.
so imagine a place where you get constantly kicked nevertheless you stand totally aside, have an incredible bad sound (the PA was not right for the kinds of sounds that were played, it couldn’t transport the grooves, instead it was really loud in the mid’s, so our ears were hurting until 2 days later), and some posing DJ’s on stage who celebrate this situation even more. some time around 5-6 i finally had some space to dance and some nicer dubstep was played, obviously too nice for this party, or was it because the space started to get empty (?) well it closed down 20 minutes later…. this last set starting showed that the dj’s would be capable of playing some exiting stuff, exiting not in the sense of fast and spectacular like the dead and cliche stuff that we witnessed but exiting music that really gets people into the mood of celebrating and dancing.

the weapon of criticism cannot in any case replace the criticism of weapons (karl marx)

so here is dr0fn0thing’s guide how to crash a mosh pit. it is a pretty nasty advisory, but might come handy when faced with pogo hools taking over a whole space instead of staying in a compact mosh pit.

1. a mosh pit is established when some hools in the crowd start pushing each other, in a ping-pong effect they create a little area of constand movement and pushing.

2. according to the 80′s (or was it 90′s?) pogo theory of karl nagel (one of the formerly central figures of the german anarchist pogo party) now a common structure gets established: center area for people who feel like pushing and get pushed, a ring around them of volunteers that only push as to keep the central crowd compact, an outer ring (the rest of the people) who engage in other activity.

3. you cannot crush a pogo/mosh pit from the outside, since the outer ring is only in the position to push towards a compact mosh mass, so pushing from there won’t change anything.

4. well it’s a dirty job, but indeed you have to go to the inside. you have to act counterproductive to the pogo force. remember: they jump and walk and push each other with the shoulders and hands. so what you have to do is to stand still (stand with a streched legs a bit opened, which will give you stability and raise the chance that people stumble and in a chain reaction the whole pit will fall) and raise your elbows, the only party of your body that the others don’t want to meet because it hurts.

5. that should end the pogo enthusiasm after some moments.

violent dancing is nice if people can decide if they want to get involved, if you just do it to hurt others either everybody will leave or someone will take measures against you.

here there is always struggle. it’s the eternal war. (ingeborg bachmann)

dj beatter – interview

by fancypunk

This is an interview with a dj beatter , a talented new dj from Greece as well as a good friend , follower of this blog since the beginning. You can listen the live dj set of dj beatter on freakuency radio every Sunday at 18.00 in London , 19.00 in Berlin and Budapest and 20.00 for Athens and Sofia.

interview taken for shituationist blog March 2010 by Fancypunk

Q1). we can start this interview by introducing your personal background , when have you started playing at parties as well as making music?

A1). My first involvement with music started when I was still very young. To be at this level today means that I had many influences all of these years from several other genres. Before I start playing house-tech-minimal , I was playing different kind of music. For instance I ve started my dj playing with reggae , ska , dub , trip hop. My involvement with dance music was rather a job of dj soubri who encouraged me to start listening house and techno. Now after 7 years I do my own production and I hope soon to find my way there.

Q2). Perhaps can you tell us a bit how you decide to use the name dj beatter

A2.) The name dj Beatter came up to my mind long time ago and I decide to use it because it sounds good :) . It contains two words : my real name: “Peter” and the word beat.

Q3). What makes a dj/producer unique ?

A3).This is a rather good question my friend (Fancypunk). I do believe that a dj/producer is unique when He is producing his own music and presenting it live to the people. who can deny that ?

Q4). Besides the Freakuency radio where someone can listen your dj sets live ?? are you doing/organizing parties in any clubs of your area?

A4). You can also listen my sets at an other radio station named myvita.gr. Ofcourse Im playing often live in parties , you can easily get information via my group on facebook and my myspace page.

Q5). ..and what about other places? where have you played in the past besides Crete Island?

A5). I have played many times in Athens and in the city of Larisa (central greece)

Q6). Do you have a soundcloud account ? or where someone can download your dj set?

A6). I do not have a soundcloud account yet but If someone wants to download my sets I have uploaded them on rapidshare , anyone can find the links at my group on facebook also at my myspace page as I said before.

Q7). Perhaps you can tell us few words about other collaborations you had

A7). I did collaborate with many greek djs such as Christian Campas , George Apergis. It was my honor as well to take part at Akti music Festival in Crete , beeing in the same stage with John Acquaviva Satoshi Tomiie, Terry Francis, and Mikele.

Q8).do you have your own studio? what kind of equipment do you use?

A8). Yes I have somehow my own studio at home. Indeed it needs many of equiment still but I can work properly at the moment. What I have is a soundcard “native instruments audio control 1” , two good sound boxes monitor of “Trevi” , my laptop and certainly my sound mixer which is an “Allen & heath xone 92 , one microphone and here we go …..

Q9). House , techno and generally dance music scene is incredibly big in North European metropolis , such as Berlin , London etc.. how you feel your connection to this? can you tell us a bit more things concerning the party scene in Crete?

A9). To be honest , what I find really attractive in these countries is the big support of the people to the electronic dance music and the good infrastructure/organization of the events. If you re asking me how I feel my connection to this , I can easily say that it would be great to get there one day. Now concerning the party scene in Crete is more or less “silent”.Here is not such a good organization/infrastructure of clubs for a proper promotion of the music. From the side of the local djs , they do their best and as a result you can easily see that the ammount of people who are joining the events is increasing slowly.

Q10) What are your future plans ?

A10). My future plans are rather to manage taking my degree at the university and afterwards to focus on music and specifically in my own production of tracks and ofcourse releasing them on a label

Q11). What other djs and artists inspire you ? any shootouts and recommendations ?

A11). There are many good artists who inspired me from time to time. I will just refer some of them. Stefan bodzin, Oliver huntemann, Paul kalkbrenner, Booka Shade, Deadmau5 and definitely Dubfire

report + videos/photos: space invaders against boredom(1st party of shituationist institute + freakuency radio) at Thessaloniki 30-01-2010 (part1)

by insti2te

Our first party in Greece is a fact. It was a great event , the djs gave inspiration , the people were dancing till the end and the queer , party people attitude was excellent. Instead a party report , we are referring the short notes of Aris (a person behind the organizational process in Thessaloniki) and some more thoughts by fancypunk author of this blog and dj at the party(second part available tomorrow) . You can also find 2 short videos with kalle and tristen playing as well as many photos. See you at the next event .. party is everywhere

Aris wrote:

As I ‘m getting many a congrats-message, and although I try to respond personally to everyone, I have only one thing to say: I ‘ve been in many a party with great sound, great DJs, in an optimal location etc. Often I didn’t have fun at all; cause it is the party-people, the mood that they bring, that makes a party.

This party was a success cause the people who attended were not aggressive, we were all there to have fun, we acted friendly and politely and we (well me not so much, as I sadly was far too busy :P ) danced “like nobody’s watching” :-)

The space invaders are normophobic. They love socializing and people who are friendly and good-mannered, that being the essence of partying (along with good music and very dark decadent spaces, unquestionably)

At 7:00 we had to discontinue the use of Peirama, so we moved to another location and partied till after 10:00!

Thank you all, for making this a really ENJOYABLE event!

The party actually took some time to get started. I was too busy running around to understand what precisely was going on, but my sources tell me that after 3:00 we had a great mood and lot’s of crazy dancing!

Especially, but not exclusively, and in no specific order, Giannis Dracopoulos, Harris Tzortzis, Antonio Dalkiran, Panagiotis our bartender and Lena, Fancypunk , fly butter, and Angelos our warming-up-DJs. This event couldn’t have been the success it was without you!

Alexandros XVanda, I do not thank you, I LOVE you!
Apollwn S. Pytheios, you ARE space invader!

Tristen, Ka Ger (Kalle) YOU ARE HOT (in every possible meaning of the word! ;-)

Life 89.2 fm reunion party “15 years after”

by fancypunk

On Friday 22nd of January a reunion party of life Fm will take place in Athens. Few lines for people who don’t know what life fm 89.2 is about “special edition for the readers this month of the shituationist blog as well”. Dedicating some lines for life fm  means that we present something concerning history of electronic music in Greece. Truly for people like me lifefm is a legendary frequency , is history of Athenian dance music scene in general. It is the radio that we were listening for years non stop . Life fm is the first electronic music radio in Athens  , definitely part of the golden times of rave in Greece.

For some of us Life fm is also  a beautiful  distinct recollection of how dance music scene looked like 15 years ago. Perhaps today, my knowledge and the style of electronic music I’m listening doesn’t really meets the line up of the anniversary party for the 15 years of life fm. But in the other hand I would certainly like to attend , most probably because I will meet people who grew up with the radio:)I’m excited in the idea of having once again good time by talking  about the past years  and memories of our childhood…I still remember how disappointed I was when the radio  stopped functioning

Well if you think the same with me , let’s go to the party and listen popular stuff such as trance tracks etc..  well-known from the daily program of the radio. I consider this party  a good occasion (food) to discuss further what happened that years , maybe it  could give us a motivation for a good article concerning anti-history of dance music scene in Greece??
