interview: Illustrated from Los Angeles

by fancypunk

Few days ago, we wrote briefly about a new friend from the States called Illustrated. Its very nice that we had the opportunity for an extend interview with him concerning his background and future plans. We would like to special thanks Illustrated for this interview. We expect more news and music by Illustrated  in the near future.

* the track bellow from the remix competition here http://soundtrackloops.com/illustrated-remix-contest/

Q1 Could you tell us something about yourself and your artistic background please.
I grew up with music around me my entire life. My parents are both music majors, and as great of musicians as they are I wouldn’t ever listen to anything they had to say. It use to drive my mom crazy. I just have always had my own way of doing things.  But if there was one thing my mom got across to me at some point in my life was when she told me “you don’t have a song unless you have a great melody”. Thats always stuck with me in everything that I have written.

When I was a kid though I use to want to be a professional baseball player believe it or not. Around 10 or 11 I stopped playing and my dad bought me a bass guitar for Xmas. Soon after I discovered bands like  Blink 182, and Nofx which completely changed my life in a matter of minutes. I started loving punk music and played in various bands all the way up until last year. It wasn’t really until a year or so ago I started getting really into EDM, and Dubstep. When my band broke up in August, I was at a complete cross roads on what I was going to do. I knew I couldn’t be in a band anymore. If I have learned anything in my life its that you really can only rely on yourself. So one day  I was like alright I am moving to LA, I am going to learn Ableton, and I am doing music on my own from now on. I am going to start my own project, I am going to call it “ILLUSTRATED”, and if its works it works, and if fails it fails. But at least I know its because of me, and not a band member. I have been producing on Ableton for about 5 months now, my debut EP “Mental Drug” is out and it feels like I have been making this genre my whole life. The transition has been the most natural thing ever for me. I love it, I am completely obsessed.

Q2 Do you work on your own, what collaborations do you participate in (label, musical partners, etc)?
A few of the tracks on “Mental Drug” i collaborated with my friend Tony (Sound Remedy). I randomly found him on craigslist. Long story short he really helped me jump start ILLUSTRATED. We come from completely two different musical genres, but when we write music together its like magic. That sounds so lame, but seriously it just works. I am sure we will do another track(s) sometime in the future. I currently released my EP through my friend Jason Donnolley’s label “Solar Sound Records”. We have a couple song ideas we have been bouncing around that I am sure we will finish up in the near future. Right now we are focusing on a remix contest he is putting on for my single, “Subtle Hints”. FL studio, and his companies “Peace Love Productions, and Sound Track Loops” are sponsoring it. The winner will receive free software from them. I will have those details very soon.

Q3 in Europe with surprise we see a tremendous growth of dubstep in the USA, what are the specific reasons in your opinion and what the future brings to the scene?
Dubstep to me is the electronic version of metal, and punk. I think thats why I love it. its fast, the energy is insane, and people go crazy to it.   At these festivals you’ve got all these people dressed in crazy outfits, no one judges or cares and for that day or night its like everyone is together. Its a really cool movement going on. I think if anything destroys it its going to be all the bros starting to mosh at the dubstep shows. I saw Nero two nights ago, and during the most epic transition ever these meat heads start a pit. I know i said its like the electronic version of metal but come on do that shit at a rock how where its supposed to be.

Q4 What equipment do you use, what is your work process?
I produce in Ableton, use Massive,Ohmicide, and various plug ins to make my sounds. Nine times out of ten I have a melody in my head, and a basic  song idea that I roughly arrange on guitar. After that I will sit on Ableton for hours, and hammer it out. I am the worst at getting really excited about an idea late at night. I will think its the best thing I have ever written and wake up and hate it. Thats just the process for me though I will try a million different things out. I like to think I have a pretty good idea for what works and what doesn’t so I will tweek a song until I think its the absolute best I can possibly make it. A song on the EP called “Super Natural” I probably changed 200 times, and spent a month on. That track drove me fucking crazy, but I am really proud of how it came out.

Q5 What are your next gigs and where can we preview your works online?
I actually just started working on my live set today. Since I have launched this project the only thing I have been concerned about is producing solid material so that I could start playing live to showcase my production. I am booked a few months from now for an event in TX , but I will start playing before that by summer. You can hear/find any of my stuff at:
Facebook.com/illustratedmusic
Soundcloud.com/illustratedmusic
Youtube.com/illustratedofficial
Twitter.com/illustrated

Q6 Any plans for the future you want to announce here…?
Lots and lots of music, shows, merch, and me rambling on my social networks. I have a couple other things in the works that I am not ready to address yet, but they are exciting.

Q7 How about some namedropping, do you want to recommend some artists that inspire you?
Check out my friend Jason Donnolley(DJ PUZZLE) and his companies: Peace Love Productions,Sound Track Loops, and Solar Sound Records, and my friend Tony of Sound Remedy. Both great producers that I will always continue to work with in some way. I am also really inspired by a rock producer here in LA named John Feldmann. He’s not an EDM producer by any means but his programming, and production are flawless. Before I die I will do a song with Feldmann. One more thing, make sure and check out/follow two up and coming blogs  “Goose Party”, and “Dank Vibes” based out of TX. Those guys have had my back since day one.

Interview: Mr.Feathers on upcoming album ‘Knife Cream Sundae’

by mnanotek

You are chilling on a tropical beach, holding a passion fruit Mojito on one hand and your mp3 player on the other. Everything seems to be normal.. until you press that play button. A mysterious creature has seized the beach, the pineapple trees and your cocktail and you are about to be sucked in the Bermuda Triangle..Mr.Feathers is back! Knife Cream Sundae is his second release on Miami’s Triangle Earth and introduces a more refined sound, that is packed with pitched up vocal craziness, weirdo hip hop outbursts and heavy galactic bass.

‘..embrace the bass in your face delivered by Feathers.’

Hello Mr.Feathers! How are things on Triangle Earth and what has changed since the last time we spoke?

Things are good at Triangle Earth. My album Knife Cream Sundae is due to come out on May 5th. I started the album 2 months before I released Galactic Trinity. On my new album I collaborated with some cool friends, super cyborg aliens called Metro Zu and with another great electronic musician from Miami called Line noise. Otto Von Schirach made some sounds for me on a track I called Playboy Toy. Super fun!

What hardware and software did you use? What’s your favorite one?

Technology is moving fast so I used my iPod touch with different vocal apps and sound morphing apps.  I also used a new laptop, which is laptop No7. I call it white claw because everything on it is white. I did lots more vocals this time like Enter Little Ox and Mr.Feathers. As far as software it really depends on my mood. I like using Frooty Loops, Renoise, Sound Forge and Magic.

Could you give us an insight on the underground Miami music/art scene? Any highlights from the past year?

Miami music scene is super creative and super lousy. There is not one day that doesn’t pass by that there isn’t a party happening. I took a break for WMC and Ultra Music Fest and all the other parties and focused on getting my album to sound extremely good. I poured my heart out on super original sound and short tracks that are genreless. I wanted them to last forever.

Has Miami’s tropical climate and the fact that you live right next to the Bermuda triangle influenced your work in any ways?

The triangle trap does play an amazing influence in my music, I’m more focused and there is an energy here that captures intellectual creativity.

What’s Mr.Feathers’ and Triangle Earth’s next mission? Any plans you’d like to announce here?

My next mission is to create some really amazing videos to go along with the tracks and hopefully go to the uk and do some shows with Otto.

I am unique, I am Mr.Feathers. Thank you Nanotek and Shituationists and London and to all my friends on planet earth.

Saturday set: Armando Gallop Tribute / Tales from the Trackside

There is no need to repeat again how much I love Armando Gallop since I was a young teenager. best clubs of 2011 (what the shituationist readers voted)

by fancypunk

Few weeks ago, we asked our readers to vote for the best club of the year.We would like to thanks everyone who participated to this. Readers worldwide , from countries such as Netherlands, United Kingdom, Greece, Germany, Australia, South Korea, USA, Canada, France, Japan, Poland, Austria and more.

the 5 Best club of the year according the majority of the people who answered are:

1) Berghain (Berlin)

Berghain/Panorama bar close to the Berlin wall, the name is taken from the two big city districts. The club is located in a former power plant in Friedrichshain, behind the Berlin Ostbahnhof railway station. The building is distinguished by its enormous dimensions, which accommodate an 18 meter high dancefloor and space for 1500 guests, and also its minimalist interior design, dominated by steel and concrete. The best djs and artists of contemporary electronic music, especially techno and house  from this planet are often guests of Berghain. Events like SUB:STANCE of Scuba is definitely remarkable. You can read an interesting article about berghain by example magazine

2) Corcica studios (London)

CORSICA STUDIOS is an independent arts organisation that sets up and develops creative spaces in areas of London.  Over the last six years we have become a much-loved and respected club, live music and arts destination for discerning clubbers and music lovers. We are home to many of the capital’s finest events, parties and club nights and constantly represent the best in left-field and underground music and talent. http://www.corsicastudios.com/

3) about blank (Berlin)

About blank is a rather new club, located in the east Berlin side. It runs by a collective and hosts many left wing projects and parties such as Love techno Hate Germany

This venue remains one  of our best-beloved destinations for the shituationist institute team and friends. We spent loads of weekends in this place as well as we involved in many parties organized by us and friends. The official page of about blank is http://aboutparty.net/

4) Pratersauna (Vienna)

I was never been there. But few people mentioned this venue in Vienna.Im using the description from their website. This former sweat’n’bang wellness center surrounded by the peaceful Prater greens is an old-school Viennese institution (1965), still unspoiled by its original architecture and its dubious reputation. Its minimalistic space combining 60’s charm with contemporary interior and art design is set up as a ‘micro cosmos’ for creative communities. The official webpage http://pratersauna.tv/site/

5) La macarena (Barcelona)

This is an other unknown venue in Europe for us. According Resident Advisor : Intimate techno club right in the heart of Gotico. Regular label nights and a DJ who spins virtually in the middle of the dancefloor. Nice crowds and open every day of the week.

by mnanotek

Today’s free download is a track by oOoOO’s forthcoming EP Our Loving Is Hurting Us. This is going to be San Francisco’s oOoOO second release on Tri Angle Records, which really stood out in 2011. Bitter sweet ambiance, nicely crafted production &  Butterclock’s eery vocals definitely make it another essential release by oOoOO.

interview with Hiro Kone from New York

by fancypunk

Hiro Kone is an artist from New. A link with some of her tracks on soundcloud http://soundcloud.com/hirokone  and with her gorgeous website here http://www.hirokone.com/. I would like to special thanks Jen and Hiro Kone for this interview.

SI: Could you tell us something about yourself and your artistic background please.

HK: A constant, unyielding engagement with the break between the worlds.

SI: Do you work on your own, what collaborations do you participate in (label, musical partners, etc)?

HK: I work mostly by myself but I enjoy collaborating — especially since I’ve become a solo artist. Tim Dewit (formerly of Gang Gang Dance) and I got together late last winter and produced my latest EP out on Bitterroot Records. I’ve also worked with composer Alexis Georgopoulos (Arp, The Alps). I have some new collaborations in their beginning stages that I’m very excited about, but they are a secret.

SI: Something you want to share about your local scene, some insights or recommendations?

HK: Everything is so over-saturated these days. I recommend that everyone take a break from Facebook. Take a walk and discover something on one’s own. Talk to someone outside of your age/social group… And don’t forget to check the bottom shelf at your local book store.

SI: What equipment do you use, what is your work process?

HK: I’m a multi-instrumentalist — though my early foundation is in classical and punk music — I work a lot in “synthetic” medium now — challenging myself by using computers, drum machines, and analog modeling synths to create what is currently the Hiro Kone sound. I’ve been hard at work learning a new language the last couple of years.

SI: What are your next gigs and where can we preview your works online?

HK: I’m performing an entirely original piece for CINEMA 16 in Philadelphia on Feb. 17th. This is an incredibly challenging and exciting show for me to do. (http://ihousephilly.org/events/cinema-16/)  I will do a Hiro Kone show on Feb. 29th (Leap Year!) for the release of latest edition of PERFECT WAVE (http://www.perfectwavemag.com/). They are doing their first ever physical supplement and it will include a 12″ with an exclusive HK track entitled “Fever.”

SI: Any plans for the future you want to announce here…?

HK: Finish the next record. Read my books and write more.

SI: How about some namedropping, do you want to recommend some artists that inspire you?

HK: Jorge Luis Borges, Diamanda Galás, Mark E. Smith, Ira Cohen — I’m drawn to people that actually say something.

Universal techno documentary

by fancypunk

Excerpts from 1996′ French documentary Universal Techno featuring Juan Atkins & Derrick May.  Extend a description of the Detroit scene as well as the music progress through the concept of some of the greatest techno artists of that time. Besides techno scene and discussion you could find an interesting view of the big US metropolis , the life conditions and depressing environment. Somehow Juan Atkins put some efforts to analyse the reasons , why techno  growed so fast the previous decades there. With no doubt this film is absolutely spectacular , a good introduction for those who are interest on the history of techno in the states and beyond. This post is also part of our efforts , documenting artists and music from the early beginning of the contemporary electronic history.

featured artists: Derrick May

by fancypunk

Derrick may is part of the first generation of acid house/electronic music , rave producers and djs,  when the free parties movement was rising in  Europe and USA. He is probably one of the most remarkable producers of that age  till our days, therefore I will try to write few information concerning his history as well as publishing bellow some of his dancefloor killers who made under the name Rhythim Is Rhythim in the late 80 s also as mayday in the 90s.

May born in Michigan/Belleville , went to the high school with Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson commonly known as the belleville 3. May is credited with developing the futuristic variation on house music that would be dubbed techno by Atkins. In fact May’s career oficially started with the release of a record called “Nude Photo” (co-written by Thomas Barnett) , which was absolutely a great motivation for the Detroit music scene.

Derrick May counts loads of good releases , most of them still shake the dancefloors around the world. He was releasing his stuff under the pseudonym , (as we also mentioned before) rhythim is rhythim and mayday in the late 80s , beginning of the 90s. Actually you can find many of his tracks available online.

As Rhythim is Rhythim or Rythim Is Rythim

  • “Nude Photo”, 1987
  • “Strings Of Life”, 1987
  • “It Is What It Is”, 1988
  • “Beyond The Dance”, 1989
  • “The Beginning”, 1990
  • “Icon” / “Kao-tic Harmony”, 1991

As Mayday

  • “Sinister” / “Wiggin”, 1988

As Derrick May

  • Derrick May: Innovator, 1996
  • Derrick May: Mayday Mix, 1997

Next weeks , I will try through this blog to list/archive  some of those infuential artists of the acid house history and why not an article for the whole music scene that time. Actually it seems that the majority of the blogs and electronic music journals today are focusing on the contemporary scene , ignoring all of those great stuff of the past years of electronic music.
