Interview with Kamistry no1

You probably remember a free release on SI few days ago by Kamistry no1 . The following interview is a first attempt to get a bit closer to the underground drum n bass/jungle scene in the UK. Kamistry no1 comes from Manchester, a city with an absolutely interesting music scene and long history.

SI: Could you tell us something about yourself and your artistic background please.

K: I originate from the darkest depths of Bradford’s underground music / party scene. Currently residing in Manchester.

Artistic / music background I started making music in various forms from a an early age when I could reach the notes on the piano. Later in life I got into producing sequenced music and creating sounds with analogue equipment, patching things in wrong just to make a noise and see what happens.

SI: Do you work on your own, what collaborations do you participate in (label, musical partners, etc)?

K: All the music is made by me (Kamistry No.1) with the company of a couple of samplers. As for collaborations I’m looking at a possible collaborating with vocal artists I’m feeling right now for future releases and some remix stuff. I’m also in the process of signing a deal with a well established label based in Bristol.

SI: Something you want to share about your local scene, some insights or recommendations?

K: In Manchester Hot Milk at The Soup Kitchen once a month and any night at Antwerp Mansion is always a good party. As Bradford the nights at the mill are one of my favorite places to party.

SI: What equipment do you use, what is your work process?

K: A couple of old Akai samplers, two Yamaha reverbs, an analogue board and an outboard compressor.

The process, hmm sounds like I work in a chicken factory, hahhaha. How a I go about putting the track together tends to be different every time. More often than not once i’ve got the initial idea in my head I start by chopping up the break, make it real heavy, add that floor shaking sub, fill in the space and see how its sounding.

SI: What are your next gigs and where can we preview your works on line?

K: Busy producing during the winter months hopefully be playing out again next summer. You can check out my music on all the usual sites.

K: Will be putting out at least one more DIY release before the end of the year plus a possible release on the label I mentioned earlier and see where that takes me. More to come in 2013 for sure.

SI: How about some namedropping, do you want to recommend some artists that inspire you?

K: Inspiration on the jungle vibes I guess early moving shadow like Cosmo and Dibs, Kaotic Chemistry, Rob Playford, 3rd Party that kind of thing.
